Launch of the second edition of the pairing program

On February 26, 27, and 28, the Congress of Deputies hosted the second edition of the pairing scheme for deputies and research staff. One innovation of this edition was including a scientist-clerk pair, which expands the possibilities for knowledge exchange with other professions in Congress.

The pairing programme began on February 26, when Oficina C's new reports were presented to the Congress of Deputies. During the first day, there was also a round table discussion on "The role of scientific knowledge in legislative work."

The pairings for the second edition of this initiative were made public at the event. The scientist-deputy pairs, whose photos are available here, include:

  • María Matesanz del Barrio from the Complutense University of Madrid paired with Pedro Peña Jiménez, Clerk at the Cortes Generales.
  • Dolores Fernández Ortuño from the University of Málaga paired with Joseba Andoni Agirretxea Urresti from the Basque Parliamentary Group (EAJ-PNV).
  • Jaime Cubero Dabrio from the Spanish National Research Council (known as CSIC) paired with Marije Fullaondo la Cruz from the Euskal Herria Bildu Parliamentary Group.

On February 27, scientists paired with deputies and shadowed their work to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences between the two communities. Clerks Pedro Peña and Bárbara Cosculluela led an afternoon training about the inner workings of Spanish Parliament, particularly Congress.

The programme's second edition concluded on February 28 with a visit to the Plenary and some final reflections, emphasising the importance of these initiatives to promote effective dialogue between science and politics to make more informed decisions.
