The selected topics for the development of new reports are:

  • Artificial intelligence and education
  • Sustainable management of coastal areas
  • Suicide prevention
  • Critical raw materials in the energy transition

These four subjects were chosen from a list of twelve that Oficina C and its Advisory Council had submitted because they may be pertinent to Spain in the middle to long term.

The proposed topics meet the following criteria: limited scope, medium to long-term relevance for Spain, the existence of scientific-technical evidence, parliamentary relevance, and stimulation of public debate. The proposed topics were grouped into four major areas: environment and sustainability, biomedicine and health, energy and transportation, and new technologies and digital society.

The twelve suggested subjects were:

  • Artificial light in the night environment
  • Biotechnology applications in sustainable agriculture
  • Sustainable management of coastal areas
  • Decline of pollinators
  • Prevention of emerging diseases
  • Suicide prevention
  • Strategies against antimicrobial resistance
  • Childhood obesity in Spain
  • Critical raw materials in the energy transition
  • Options for atmospheric CO2 removal
  • Artificial intelligence and education
  • Current perspectives on quantum technologies

In the coming months, Oficina C will gather scientific and technological evidence according to its work method based on the review and contextualization of scientific literature, interviews with experts in the field, review by other scientists and technologists, and a multidisciplinary approach.

On February 26, the six reports completed during 2023 were presented at the Congress of Deputies and can be consulted here.
